PBHL 122 Contemporary Issues in American Indian Health Policy

This course builds on the foundational knowledge from the first course and focuses on contemporary challenges and opportunities in American Indian health policy. Students will examine the impact of recent policies, such as the Affordable Care Act, on AI health, as well as the integration of traditional and modern medicine. The course also covers health promotion and disease prevention strategies, environmental health issues, and how federal laws like the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) affect healthcare in AI communities. Additionally, students will explore the role of tribal health agencies and codes in promoting health and wellness, and the importance of training AI health professionals. Through discussions and case studies, students will gain insight into the future direction of AI health policy.
