MATH 172 Ojibwe Math I

The Turtle Mountain Ojibwe have rich ways of knowing passed down for generations. Specifically, mathematical ways of knowing are embedded within the language and culture such as the Ojibwe number system, the calendar/astronomy, traditional games and crafts, feats of construction/engineering, etc. This course seeks to revitalize these mathematical ways of knowing embedded within the language and culture to again be widely known and normalized within the community. This course will also place Turtle Mountain Ojibwe math within the larger context of Indigenous mathematics and Indigenous ways of teaching and learning. Some class sessions will be replaced with alternative times and locations (e.g. star mapping at night).
